Instructions: Please write 3-4 page response to the paper prompt below, double-spaced (Times New Roman, 12pt font, 1-inch margins). Make sure to answer all parts of the question. Your response should be based on the evidence from our discussion in the mini-lectures and the book. EVERYONE MUST WRITE THIS PAPER!!! ______________________________________________________________________________ You have now read all about Sam Goodman’s life and his criminal career in burglary, theft, and fencing stolen goods in the book Confessions of a Dying Thief. In this paper, I would like you to describe the offending Sam commits and (most importantly) link it to the theories and concepts we’ve covered in the course. Make sure to give examples and detail when you answer the questions. For example, don’t just tell me that Sam learned to commit crime… give me specific examples of skills he learned, where he learned them, etc. (there are a lot you could describe!!!). 1. Briefly describe Sam’s criminal career and the types of crime that Sam commits in the book. (This should be a shorter section). 2. Now discuss Differential Association/Social Learning Theory and describe the way that it applies to Sam Goodman’s criminal activity. Make sure to discuss the following… a. The skills/techniques Sam learns and how/where he learns them. b. The messages and mindset that Sam learns which make him feel that it’s acceptable to offend. Also tell the sources of these messages and where/how he learned this. c. Describe any Techniques of Neutralization that Sam uses to justify his offending. (Make sure to give specific examples for each of the points above) 3. Are there any other theories we’ve discussed that seem to explain some of Sam’s crimes and the reasons he got involved and stayed involved in crime (labeling theory, opportunity theory, cultural perspectives, etc.)? Pick one or two and tell me how this theory or theories seem to “fit” Sam’s criminal career and how it would help explain his offending. (Again… give specific examples from the book to illustrate your points). 4. Last, are there any theories that don’t seem to “fit” Sam’s offending well? Briefly tell me about some of the theories we’ve discussed that don’t seem to work as well for explaining someone like Sam and his crimes. Pick one or two and explain.
