Question Description I’m working on a Health & Medical exercise and need support. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) focuses on perceived control over a certain behavior for situations where an individual might not have complete control over their behavior. TPB focuses on attitudes that are determined by the individuals’ beliefs about the outcome of behavior and subjective norms which is determined by the person’s normative belief and the motivation that comes with the belief (Glanz et al., 2015). An example of the TPB being applied in public health is demonstrated by altering the walking behavior among adults to increase walking in the general public. This example was provided by the literature, the Systematic Development of a Brief Intervention to Increase Walking in the General Public Using an “Extended” Theory of Planned Behavior. The literature used various strategies to alter the behaviors to increase walking and they were, overcoming barrier identification/ problem solving, setting goals, providing action plan, teaching the individuals how to use prompts and cues, providing prompts that focused on past success, environmental restructuring, and relapse prevention/coping planning. The results showed that there was an increase in self-effectiveness and the intention for the individuals to walk more due to motivational strategies promoted in the experiment (French et al., 2013). This model was appropriate for the example because TPB focuses on the control and use of motivation as a factor in altering the behavior. The experiment focused on changing the attitude and the individual’s subjective norms by providing motivational interviews and other motivational entities when they overcame barriers in order to increase their walking behavior (French et al., 2013). There are other models that could be used for this example, such as the transtheoretical model (TTM) and the social cognitive theory, because they are effective in promoting physical activity. The TTM helps in changing and maintaining behavior change through the stages of changes which are pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination (Pirzadeh et al., 2015).
