HA255: Human Resources for Healthcare Organizations CLASSMATE POST #1 This week we are asked the two questions below: How the need for quality employee training and development is related to a healthcare organization’s mission, vision and values?  Typically, job roles are defined by a job description that’s created to serve the purpose of supporting an organizations specific function. For instance, physicians would not work in a company that supplied durable medical equipment. Physicians typically work in healthcare facilities and a sales professional would work for a company that supplied medical equipment. However, both roles service the medical field or healthcare industry, but their job descriptions are company-specific.  Therefore, when HR professionals consider establishing training programs, they must design them in a way that the training aligns with an organization’s mission, vision, and values. For example, hospital facilities mission may be centered on patient care and satisfaction, whereas, a durable medical equipment company may focus on sales. Let’s assume a hospital facility just invested in a few MRI machines, certainly, clinical workers will need training on how to properly operate the new machinery. Or, let’s say new electronic medical records software system was just implemented facility-wide, training would be geared toward non-clinical workers such as admissions coordinators, schedulers, and patient documentation specialist.  Why is training so important? Training is important because it increases job performance. Job performance and employee development are vital to the success of an organization because it helps the organization stay competitive and progress. Regular training gives employees the advantage to better maneuver through tough challenges in healthcare, break down communication barriers, increase access and remain qualified to deliver the best health outcomes. Also, with rapid integrated technology and healthcare policy, regular training prepares healthcare professionals with current necessary credentials needed to provide care and manage an organization.  Felicia CLASSMATE POST #2 Together, the vision, mission and values statements provide directions for everything that happens in an organization (Flynn, 2014). They usually keep everyone focused on where the organization is going and what it is trying to achieve (Flynn, 2014). They all define the core values of the organization and how people are expected to behave (Flynn, 2014). Development and training are very important in healthcare organizations to ensure the ongoing delivery of safe and competent care (Flynn, 2014). Training is a process where people gain their high potential and help the organization achieve its goals. Since the process is tied to a variety of organizational purposes, training can be viewed as specific or broader.  As a part of strategic competitiveness, employees whose capabilities stay current and who receive regular training are better able to cope with the challenges and changes occurring in healthcare (Flynn, 2014). The healthcare environment today with all the new technologies, web technology, and the increasing cost pressures without continuing training may not have staff members to provide care and manage the organization (Flynn, 2014).  Training and development can increase employee retention, job satisfaction, and productivity. Training is the tool super needed when implementing new policies, equipment, new employees, etc. Official training programs are an integral part of hiring new employees and integrating them into a company’s mission, vision, and values. There are far more consequences that come with the lack of training, especially in healthcare such as the data or privacy issues, inadequate documentation, compliance risks, patient safety risks, high turnover in staff, reduced employee productivity, legal issues, stress on management, and much more.  Sanela HI135: Legal Aspects of Health Information CLASSMATE POST #3 During the reign of Barack Obama as president, 2008-2016, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was introduced. Signed into law, March 23, 2010, more commonly referred to as “Obamacare”, the Affordable Care Act affected MANY Americans. There were three categories of individuals affected by Obamacare: 1) the Grandfathered health insurance holders, 2) the Non-grandfathered health insurance holders, and 3) the uninsured Americans.          Grandfathered health insurance holders were able to keep their current insurance plans IF their insurance company stilCl offered the plan under the new standards of the Affordable Care Act. The Non-Grandfathered health insurance holders, which included individuals who purchased health insurance after March 23, 2010 had to enroll in a new plan to meet the standards of the Affordable Care Act. Uninsured individuals would be penalized if they met the criteria. The penalty for not having insurance for that fiscal year was as high as $695 or 2% of a person’s annual income. This penalty wounded many tax payers when it came to their annual tax refunds. They were not happy.          It is obvious that the Affordable Care Act encourage many Americans to purchase insurance because of the affordability and coverage, with low deductibles and cheap payments. Some pros of the Affordable Care Act is the slowing down of the rising of health care costs, the coverage of the 10 essential health benefits, coverage for pre existing conditions and the idea that children under the age of 26 were able to continue being on their parents health insurance. The biggest pro of Obamacare was that the middle class received tax credits on their premiums. This explained Medicaid to 138% of the federal poverty level, providing coverage for adults without children. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that it would reduce the budget deficit by $143 million by 2022, by reducing government’s health care costs, raising taxes on some businesses and higher income families, and shifting cost burdens to health care providers and pharmaceutical companies.            Some cons included the raised income tax rates and the taxing of those that didn’t purchase insurance. The pharmaceutical companies were greatly impacted because of having to pay extra to close the “doughnut hole” gap to cover the difference. Although 5 million people lost their employment-based health insurance, many businesses found it more cost effective to pay the penalty. (the balance, 2019)          Obamacare was a controversial topic during the presidency of Barack Obama, leaving both positive and negative effects on Americans. What was your stand on the Affordable Care Act? I was not affected by the tax penalty because of the minimal income I was making annually, but were you? Did your employment-based health insurance get cancelled? Did your insurance transfer over? Shannon  CLASSMATE POST #4 For this discussion I have chosen to the issues of access to healthcare for the uninsured. I decided to touch on this topic because I feel this issue effects a large population.  The article from KFF.org mentions the lack of health insurance has been a steady issues in the united states. That’s where the idea to expand medicaid coverage for individual of low incoming and individuals below 400% poverty with marketplace subsides. The amount of people uninsured has increased continuously in 2 years straight. Children do not contribute much to the uninsured percentage; adults (non-elderly) are the majority with these percentages. I believe uninsured people have less medical care and timely care than an insured individual. I believe The Affordable Care Act ( ACA) helped the population a bit. A lot of people was not insured due to income; providing insurance for low-income has help this percentage I believe. It may differ for state to state and the resources people have access to.  Abeola
