Course Title: Multicultural Literature of the USNovels Covered In This Course:The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Junot Diaz Little Fires Everywhere, Celeste Ng Crazy Horse’s Girlfriend, Erika Wurth Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi CoatesOne of the major themes discussed in this course was the impact of racial/cultural minority groups being underrepresented in the media has had on how these groups are viewed and treated by society. The topic I would like to discuss is how the underrepresentation of Latinos/Latinas in Hollywood has impacted the current political climate and negative viewpoints about Latinos/Latinas in the United States. Throughout Hollywood’s history there has been severe lack of Latino/Latina actors being hired for roles in top films or popular television series as well as how the community is depicted by the majority of Latino/Latina characters (the maid, the sexpot/Latin lover, criminal/gangbanger, Spanish-speaking only, immigrant etc.) which has not changed much. The current narrative being brought forth by people who hold positions of power in the U.S. government is that Latino/Latina immigrants entering the United States are “undesirables” and detrimental to the safety and welfare of the nation. It is my belief that the history Latinos in Hollywood has played a part in our current political climate.
