Assignment Description This paper will combine elements of the course material with outsides sources and possibly group work to describe the historical roots, nature, and potential solutions to a form of racial inequality. Examples of areas of inequality that you could examine include: political representation, media representation, health, education, wealth, criminal justice, residential segregation, and employment. A successful paper will: Thoroughly describe the form of racial inequality that you have chosen for the assignment. This description should provide information about the current state of the inequality (e.g., statistics for how segregated schools are in the US) and the effects of this inequality (i.e. why does this matter?). Explore any intersectional differences in this inequality; how are people affected differently along the lines of class, gender, and sexuality? Explain how this inequality has developed over time. Were there particular policies that led to the formation of this inequality? Are there basic ideas about race, or forms of racism, that have helped to create this inequality? Where did those ideas come from and how were they kept alive over time? Present at least one potential solution that could eliminate or ameliorate this inequality. The paper must be specific about the nature of the solution. What does this solution entail? Why would it be helpful and why might it not work? Define important terms and concepts used in the paper. A successful paper must also meet the following technical requirements: The paper should use at least three texts from the course. You may also reference lectures, but these do not count towards the three course texts. Make sure to appropriately cite all sources with in-text citations and a list of references at the end of the paper. Citations are required whenever presenting ideas or text from another source, even if you are paraphrasing. This is very important; plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment. APA style is preferred, but not required. The paper should be your own, original work, except for the section on policy solutions. As you may choose to address the same area of inequality as your group policy presentation, you may use some of the material you developed for your group presentation in this section. The paper should have a clear structure with an introduction and conclusion. You may consider using section headers to help organize your paper. The paper should not contain numerous typos or mechanical issues relating to sentence structure, grammar, or word choice. The paper should be 7-9 pages long and double- or 1.5- spaced with normal (one inch) margins, and size 12, Times New Roman font. The list of references at the end of the paper are not included in the length requirement.
