Consider how storytelling works in Greek art. Keep in mind that artists are not illustrating texts, but are showing stories in their own right. Not only do they have to consider details of the story itself, but since their space is limited, they have to make choices about which scene(s) to represent, what details to include and which to cut, what narrative strategy to take, what will be the context in which their work will be seen, and how meaning and engagement with the viewer are created. The following themes have been selected as potential narratives for you to consider: Herakles and the Nemean Lion Perseus and the Gorgon Medusa Peleus and Thetis Herakles and Nessos (with and/or without Deianeira) The last is covered in Shapiro, the other stories are well known in their outline from various synopses and can be found in standard reference works. If you have an alternative story choice that will not be covered in class discussion, please let me know and we can consider it. Illustrations are available via Artstor through the library databases, and JSTOR and Project Muse can have articles. You can also check some of the websites of the major museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: British Museum Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Please note that these search pages cover the entire collection, so you will want to include modifiers such as “Greek” or use some of the limit search functions to find appropriate examples. For this assignment, please pick three or four works showing the story in question. The works should cover at least two different centuries (for example, 6th cent. & 5th cent.) and include no more than two types of the same object (for example, no more than two kraters). Then, please consider the impact that the following have on how the story is represented by an artist and how the viewer comprehends it. How does changing the style, the context, the object type, the scale, etc. change the quality of the visual story? Imagine that if you were telling the story based on the representation, how would one version differ from another and how would that change the meaning and interest of the story? For each work, provide an illustration and caption, including museum and accession number and provide a reference or link for the illustration.
