Of course, it is easy to say that songs are musical works where the music and the text work together. But HOW the words and music interact can vary widely, depending on when and where the piece was written and who wrote it. In a clear, thoughtful and well-constructed essay, discuss THREE genres or types of songs that we have studied this semester. First, tell me about the kinds of texts that are the focus of these genres of song – what do they tend to be about? What themes do they focus upon? What form do they have? Then, describe in as much detail as possible, how composers set these texts to music, using terms and concepts we learned about in class. Finally, tell me how these genres are performed – who sings them, when are they sung, and what is the context for their performance. You should support your descriptions with examples from a piece or pieces we studied in class. We’ve studied Jazz, Concerto and Folk music
